Joe was a saviour to myself and my brothers and sister, a Godsend when we were children.
He was kind , gentle, caring and understanding, with a wonderful sense of humour.
He took us every summer to his home to stay in the Spa Hotel in Lucan, driving up from Dublin then driving back down with a car load of Northern Irish children, not an easy thing to accomplish.
We were all children of the 70s troubles living the nightmare that was our every day lives, and he took us away from all of that for a short time each summer and showed us what we could have, that there was a life outside of the chaos that we lived in. For this, and his friendship i will be truly grateful and forever indebted to him and his wonderful family, his brothers, sister and his mother and father all of whom made us feel truly special.
I regret not having had the opportunity to meet with him one last time to thank him for everything he did for me, but i think he probably knows this now.
Heres to Joe Colgan, a true gentleman.
